Welcome from Principal Damian Patterson

Hello and welcome to the Academies of Mills U.S. High School whereas we anticipate rich and relevant programs to engage our students and community in the following pathways: Digital Communications and Fine Arts via Mobile App Development, Social Media and Comm/Web Design, A/V Tech, Branding, Advertising & Graphic Design, Performing Arts, Leadership through Army JROTC, Public Service including Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement.

These new structures will allow students to have choice and voice as students thrive in college and career paths that will qualify and equip them for relevant experiences which encompass leadership and learning beyond the classroom. Our staff is very skilled in these pathways. We promote strategies to promote learning and success by having a better awareness of how to meet the needs of our students as we engage with youth contexts as an anchor of culturally responsive instruction. Our goal is to develop social networks that foster student immersion in the larger communities.

Academy of Digital Communications & Fine Arts

School Information

Pathways

Scholars, in the A/V Technology and Film pathway, develop skills needed to design and produce complete recording sessions and perform mix-down, mastering, and post-production tasks. Scholars receive hands-on experiences using digital and film cameras, filters, lights, microphones, audio equipment, editing systems, and other motion picture equipment. Possible careers include computer support specialist, sound technicians or audio engineering.

The Advertising & Graphic Design pathway is for scholars interested in pursuing careers as multimedia artists, graphic designers and communications specialists. The pathway is designed so that scholars will develop strong knowledge in communications technologies and software applications and digital graphics. Upon completion of the program of study, scholars will be prepared to pursue advanced study in commercial art, graphic design or advertising.

This pathway is designed for scholars interested in computer programming specifically related to the creation of mobile applications and web design. Scholars will develop standard programming techniques and learn the logic tools and methods typically used by programmers to create mobile apps and websites.

The Social Media Communications pathway is for scholars interested in pursuing careers as communication and social media specialists, marketing and public relations. The pathway is designed so that scholars will develop strong knowledge in communications technologies and software applications. Upon completion of the program of study, scholars will be prepared to pursue advanced study in marketing or communications, or seek entry level employment with such organizations.

The Theatre and Theatre Production pathway is designed to prepare scholars for careers by developing an understanding of makeup application specifically targeted toward theatre productions, hair techniques and chemical services, facial and skin care procedures and efficient and safe work practices. Possible careers include makeup artist, nail technician, barber, cosmetologist, skin care specialist and salon owner.

Pathways

JROTC stands for the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps and is a military regulated program with a mission to educate scholars in leadership roles while making them aware of the benefits of citizenship. Possible careers span a variety of industries such as engineering, communications, logistics, aviation, intelligence, finance, medical, legal, etc. within the military.

This pathway focuses on law, leadership, society, governance, communications and ethics. Scholars choosing this pathway will be exposed to numerous careers including law, law enforcement, corrections and security related to criminal law, criminal justice, and juvenile justice. Those scholars specifically interested in pre-law, will be exposed to basic principles common to business, personal and civil law.

Scholars in the Health Science Pathway focus on the developing child, nutrition and disease, and the human body systems in order to prepare for medical professions. Experiential learning includes child observations while studying child development theories, food science, and laboratory dissection. Upon completion of this pathway, scholars will be prepared for training or a college education in biotechnology, diagnostic services, health informatics, health support services, or therapeutic services.

The University Studies pathway is a program of education where scholars prepare for college by acquiring a depth of knowledge and understanding through their coursework to prepare them for college. Scholars will take a variety of AP classes and classes with concurrent credit at a post-secondary institution.
